YML RATING:

5/5
Starts out with Darlene, an Indigenous Brazillian woman who Leaves her own wedding to be single. She starts working at a sugar cane farm in the rural area of Bahia, Brazil. She meets a man who is willing to give her a house if she marries him. She marries him and he starts treating her poorly, he does nothing around the house and makes her do everything. She then starts seeing his cousin and eventually, they get married, mind you already being married to the first guy. Then, one of the workers of her sugar cane farm shows up at her front door, they take him in, and once again she falls in love with him and marries him. She has children with all three of them. And out of jealousy, the first man she married, takes her kids to the city and registers them under his name, effectively giving him full custody. Then, roll credits. It end on an open ending.

YML analysis

I like the movie, I watched it in the original Brazillian as I am Portuguese. To really know what happens behind this movie, you have to know some context. In brazil, men are encouraged to have lovers outside of their marriage, and women are meant to be strictly for their husbands. For a woman to do this goes against the cultural norms of brazil and almost brings a sense of empowerment to Brazilian women, and since the roles are reversed, it’s something that is inherently wrong. The movie itself has a really tight budget, being filmed mostly on the premises of the house where Darlene lives. Almost everyone in the movie is a mixed Indigenous/Portuguese person or Full indegenous.
